- There have been pirates since before the Greek poet Homer. There are different types of pirates, like Edward Teach (Blackbeard) who raided commercial shipping and there were the pirates who operated in the Mediterranean, known as the Barbary Pirates. They operated from the time that Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain threw the Jews and Arabs out of Spain in the 15th and 16th century, and those I know quite a bit about and have many books on because I wrote a historical article about them. When US merchant ships entered into the Mediterranean after the American Revolution, they were besieged by pirates who preyed on all shipping in that area. Countries that were bothered by the Barbary Pirates were Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Russia, England, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and any other maritime nation that sent ships into the area. The US ended the most of it in 1805 with a Naval War with Tripoli and returned after the War of 1812 to end it with the other pirating states. You should be able to find a lot on pirates, the more romantic types, on the Internet. If you wish, you can email me for titles on the Barbary Pirates, but buying the books in Ukraine might be difficult. You can always plug Pirates into Google and find something.
