What resources should a new coin collector use to get started?

I inherited a lot of coins (especially buffalo nickels and Indian head pennies, along with some others) from a relative. I would like to learn more about these coins and how I should display/protect them. They are literally in coffee cans right now. What is a good resources guide for new coin collectors?

  1. I am glad you want to continue your relatives interest in coin collecting. I would suggest getting a copy of "A guide Book of United States Coins" 2009 or 2010 edition. It is also known as the Red Book because of it's cover. Any library or book store should have one. This is the base reference book that a beginner should start with. You can buy other reference books as your interest grow. I would also suggest you join a local coin club and possibly the ANA (money.org). These are both great sources of information for the beginner as well as the experienced collector. Visit local coin dealers and go to coin shows in your area to get an idea of all that the hobby has to offer. Most important ... have fun.
  2. First thing DO NOT handle them with bare hands! The human hand has lots of oils that will ruin a coin. Wear gloves made just for this. Second, get holders. Hard plastic are the best for the better coins. The paper holders are ok for coins that are old but not worth much. These are for looking and pulling out if you are into getting more along the way. Third, never use them as cash! They are rare coins to be looked at and if need be sold for a profit. Forth, ENJOY!!!!!
