Which language (other than English) do you people recommend for scientific purposes? Put in another way, I would like to learn a new language that will give me access to scientific resources and researches that can not be found in English! To make it easier, I already identified three languages that I would like to learn (I have taken introductory courses in all of the three of them): 1-French (can understand some of it) 2-German (too much memorizing, but you gain access to all of the old works in quantum, thermodynamics and all of the fundamental theories) 3-Japanese (liked it the most, and was the easiest) Any other suggestions are welcomed as well!

Best resource guide for teaching english to chinese speaker? I was wondering if anyone had any idea what would be the best resource for teaching english to a chinese speaker. She is from taiwan, and has a basic understanding of the english language. Where she lacks is in her writing, and in her sentence structure. She also does not wish to go through the ESL books any longer as she feels this is not much to her, she is beyond ESL books. So that is my challenge, and was wondering if anyone had any adequate resources in which i could provide her. Also does anyone have any other teaching ideas and strategies i could provide her to make english learning fun and enjoyable, and where she will get something out of it. I appreciate the help, thanks! Rosetta stone is a good resource, but not really what i am looking for, and it is costly, so i want to stray from that. I am looking more at books and workbooks specifically.

Anyone Good in the English Language!!!? Ok so here is the deal……. I have written a college essay and I need someone to revise it for me. I am not good with writing, editing or cleaning up essays. I have an English based learning disability so it is very hard for me to do these kinds of things. I spell like a 10 year old. I really don’t have anyone to edit for me, I mean my family is always busy and I am home school so I do not have the resources other kids my age have. If you are interested in helping me I would greatly appreciate it. My essay is not that long, and I guarantee you will not be bored while reading it. This would mean so much to me. You can obtain my essay by emailing me @ BrettMHannan@msn.com. And don’t worry I am not perusing a career that has to do with English, I want to be a civil engineer (mostly all math :-]) Thanks in advance, Your friendly Brett

English Language in the 1700-1900 10 POINTS? Has British English changed from around eras ranging from the 1700's to the early 1900? I was reading Jane Austin's Emma and noticed that words such as "surprise" were spelt with a z 'surprize' (like American English), but other words were spelled in the traditional "ou" way (like "favour"). Does anyone know of any internet resources that could help explain this/ support this? 10 points to best answer. Thank-you very much in advance. Already checked the publisher, and I know that British English has varied. Any sites that support this?

How does a new Russian immigrant find resources (e.g. help with learning English, finding a job, etc.?)? My husband and I will be moving to Sacramento, CA soon from Russia. We know there are resources for new immigrants, but don't know how to tap into them, especially in finding an employer who is sympathetic to English not being the first language. My husband is able to understand English fairly well, but he feels very awkward in speaking or if others speak very fast in English, he cannot catch the whole concept. He is a very good worker, very conscientious, but he is somewhat fearful that he will not be able to find a job because of his language skills. Please, if anyone knows of services that are available to us in the Sacramento area, let us know. Thanks.
How do foreign primary schools deal with children with a different native language ? In UK children with EAL (english as additional language) are given lots of assistance and resources. How does this compare with other countries, eg if a Brit child moves to Spain/France etc?

Where can I find a comprehensive course or textbook on the Belarusian language for an advanced beginner? I am a native English speaker who speaks Russian reasonably well and I have had some exposure to the Belarusian language. I think I have found (and worked through) most of the free internet resources, but I would like to find a Belarusian equivalent to the first and second year courses taught in other languages at the University level.
Why do people bristle at the mention of making English our official language? From an economic point of view, it seems like a waste of scarce tax dollars to provide translations for government documents in every language from Arabic to Urdu. Why are driving manuals translated into foreign languages when road signs are all in English?!? I'm a child of European immigrants and I sympathize with new-commers who don't yet speak English. Hoewever, when my folks arrived here in the late 50s, they relied on relatives to help them with any translations they needed and since my folks were private people, they made it their business to learn English fast. They did this by taking advantage of free English classes at night, reading a daily English newspaper and watching TV in English. I have other relatives who only read the newspaper in their native tongue, listen to their native language radio programs, and now, with cable & satellite TV, they watch only their ethnic programming. As a result, they can hardly speak English despite being in the USA for almost 50 years. I'm not saying all of this to be racist. It's just that people who come to this country have to accept some of the responsibility to learn English if they want to prosper and help their children and not expect the government to provide translation services for evrything under the sun. If we can accept the notion that tax dollars are scarce and they don't just come pouring out of a spigot, we can see that (with a few exceptions of course) this need to translate everything is a waste of limited resources that can best be used elsewhere. There are so many free English classes offered by local schools, churches and libraries. I think people should learn English or else bring a family member or a friend if they need help with translating. Were the Italian, Greek, Polish, Norwegian immigrants of the past any smarter than the current crop of immigrants? Who knows? But the government sure didn't make things easier for them by translating everything so they were forced to learn English or they brought someone with them who knew English. They didn't have this mentality that they were entitled to have things translated for them. Why is the requirement to learn English such a bad thing and why is it considered racist to require people to learn English?
Could someone check my text in English. My native language is croatian. Thanks a lot!!? In order to protect the vallues of this mountain, the use of its resources has to be rationalized and preserved. For the mountain areas as Bengica the best recommendation would be the development of alternative forms in tourism - the rural one and the sports tourism because that is a good way for the existence of the local inhabitants. The mass tourism should be avoided, after the traditional forms of agriculture, especially the farming, the completely controlled use of biological resources and other types and other use of the resources. Development of the infrastructure should be in accordance with the goals of the sustainable development of the area.
Do you think students of today have it harder now in school? I think we really do. Teachers overload students with homework to the point that you have no time to do anything else but that. I stayed up all night on a paper for english last week, and didn't get to my chemistry homework because of it. Do teachers seem to forget we have other classes that give us work as well? The teachers are asking for too much... a 3 page typed paper on the history of the english language complete with resources and 25 examples? due the NEXT class period this is crazy.
How do I remain motivated to learn a new language? I feel like giving up? I'm the kind of person that is really intrested in learning new languages. ever since I was a kid I've wanted to be fluent in a language other than english. so I've made many attempts to learn new languages and failed each time either because I didn't have good resources or I got bored with it, or it seemed too hard for me and I gave up. so currently I've been teaching myself Japanese. at first I was very excited about it and could sit for hours studying this Japanese book I bought. but now I've grown bored with not just the book, but with learning it altogether. it's not that I'm unintrested in learning Japanese, it's just that I'm getting bored with my form of studying it. I am unable to take Japanese classes at the moment and I don't know any fluent Japanese speakers. so I'm on my own with this and it has gotten very very difficult to stick with it and remain motivated. I'm tired of giving up when trying to teach myself a new language. idk what to do.
Single American mother with special needs child wants to work/live in Japan? I am graduating from college in December. My daughter will be 4 in December. I always wanted to travel around the world when I graduated from college, but now that I have a child with a severe speech/language delay, I'm going to have to be more stationary. :) If I were to choose just one place, I would like to work/live in for at least a year, it would be a city in Japan. I heard about the long work hours which concern me being able to pick up my child from pre-school/daycare. I know there are some english schools for disabled chlildren, but I will still have the problem of picking her up. Are there any other resources for english-speaking single mothers in Japan? Babysitting services, transportation etc..
What makes English people so intelligent? I always wonder as what makes English people so intelligent. Is it the structure of education, diet, economy, support, resources or just something to do with genes? As UK (England) being such a small country, they managed to rule over the 80% of the globe. They managed to make their language as international language. I being an Indian and brought up in India and during my school and college studies all my subjects were in English and even though India was an independent country at that time, English was and is still considered more of superior language. If you speak English in India then you get more respect than speaking any other language. This probably may be because the constitution and law was made and written by British for India but Indian must have found extremely difficult or challenging to make new law books or constitution in their own language. Language plays a vital role in progress of any nation and English must have thought this at that time considering future forecasting. Other thing I believe is may be the structure of education. The English education structure is all about mental development and not about just passing your exams. Child get engaged in role plays, activities to get better understanding and become more innovative. The example for this is the English channels. You tell me how many English channels have been copied around the world. Who wants to be millionaire, X factor, Weakest link, Strictly come dancing...etc I have never seen English channels copying other countries programmes but why does other country copy English programmes. Even though English people have given independence to many countries but they still rely on English system. English people are more with etiquette, manners, civilized, tolerant and helpful behaviour even though their analyzing is more superior to other country people and people from other countries with no civilized behaviour, no tolerance and behave cowardly towards society; have no vision acts like most intelligent people on the earth? What is the actual reason that makes them more intelligent? Human must have started from one point (considering all the myths and science including Adam and Eve, Big Bang..etc) but how did this group of community became more inventive and intelligent than the rest of world? I am looking for real way of becoming an intelligent and considerate human being and I hope someone might give me light here. Thanks
What are the best ways and resources to learn a language? To start off, I am a total beginner who only speaks English though I want to learn a lot more than that. I'm pretty much interested in only Middle-Eastern languages like Hebrew, Farsi/Persian, Arabic, and alot of other Semitic languages. I know that watching movies is a good way to soak up a language but first you have to actually know the language--which I don't so what would be the best way to learn these languages. I cannot move to the Middle-East either. I will be in high school next year and the only languages they have are Spanish, French, Latin, and possibly German and Japanese. I was thinking about taking 2 years of Latin and 2 years of Spanish but what is your opinion? Thanks! Do you know where I could find any of the music?
Resources for teaching English!? In the university I attend, if you study a language you get paired with someone who speaks the language as a native and who is trying to learn English so that we can help each other. For German [which I can speak pretty well] I got paired with a lovely girl who has a good knowledge of English, so we're both getting on fine. HOWEVER... for Italian [which I'm taking as a complete beginner!] I got paired with a man who can't speak a word of English... As you can imagine, it's a pretty awkward situation! So far I've typed up some irregular English verbs for him to learn, but I really need help- I have no idea what other notes I can make for him! Does anybody know any websites that has resources which could help me? Thanks in advance!!
Please, about the english language...? I'm Brazilian and I need to know what's the errors in this text: "This study focus on the analysis of the ergonomics and usability of these websites in the Public Defender of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, verifying compliance of the three portals to good usability practices on the Web. Its purpose was to point out the major inconsistencies exist, what was possible by conducting a case study and then carrying out a comparative analysis. It was essential to develop high-fidelity prototypes for the pages that had serious problems of usability, aiming to consider possible changes that were necessary. The main problems were investigated by verifying the presence, absence and presentation of resources, with 79 items that made up a checklist of analysis. The items were grouped into nine categories (content, navigation, search, branding, services, accessibility, control, technology and other aspects of usability) and each was assigned a rating - from 1 to 10 - according to the impact exercise in the User Experience by the portal. The results show that there are serious distortions in the three sites evaluated, which may result from minor annoyances in navigating the ban on use of specific resources. There is need for greater attention by state governments to their web addresses, since they are important communication tool by the government in society." Can you show me? Thanks and greetings from Brazil.

What is chaos theory and where would I get a basic understanding of it? I would be interested in as simple a description as can be managed. If anyone can point me in the direction of good books/sites/etc. that can explain further, it would be appreciated. For any necessary "level-scaling" matters for pointing out further resources: I know nothing of the subject. I am a college graduate, although with only some mathematical background (I took several more basic college-level mathematics courses, but I did not specialize in a mathematical discipline). I am a native speaker of English and have no other language fluencies.
Online table translating english alphabet to hebrew, arabic, greek, and other languages? I am looking for an online table (or set of tables) that translates the english alphabet into its corresponding member--if there is an appropriate one--in other alphabets. I'm interested in greek, hebrew, and arabic in particular (what other prominent ones are there?), and also letter history and etymology. I have found a great resource in wikipedia, but nothing I can download in summary form. I'm going crazy creating my own table from all the information on wikipedia. I'm hoping there is a better way. I haven't been successful searching either. Thank you for any advice!
Over crowding issues with certain areas causing issues with resources, should new LEGAL immigrants be ......? relocated upon arrival to areas less highly populated with immigrants and where more job sources are available? Would that make them also more inclined to adapt with fewer languages other than English spoken? I.E. areas that have man power shortages to fulfill job quotas?
if Americans want immigrants to learn English...? then why do they have so many resources available in the immigrants native tongue? ex. Press 1 for English, Press 2 for some other language...

Which language should I learn first??? (Japanese, French, Danish, German)? Okay, I want to learn other languages, I'm just having a difficult time deciding which one to learn first. I want to learn Japanese, Danish, German, and French the most right now. I already have a lot of experience with Japanese, great at pronunciation, and I'm probably just a bit above a beginner level. The only thing though, is that I don't know how to write in Japanese at all, and just taking all the time to actually sit down and learn this language is really time consuming, which is not something I have a lot of right now (I am teaching myself, by the way). And I'm wondering if I should start with another European language that's a little closer to my native tongue. Like Danish. A lot of the words are similar to English, and I've picked up the pronunciation surprisingly well. I've only studied Danish for like a week, but I'm already understanding it well. And the alphabet is exactly like the English alphabet, just said differently and with a few more letters. With German, I have very little experience, and pronouncing words are hard for me (strange I'm better with Danish words than German, right? haha) I really know almost nothing about German, including the grammar, so I don't know if it's really difficult or what. And finally, French. Again, I don't know a lot about this language. In fact, I don't know much beyond what the average American does (bonjour, merci, parle vous francais, etc. ), and I know nothing about grammar and things like that, but I'm told I'm fairly well at pronouncing the words. So what do you think? Which language should I learn first/what order should I learn them in? Also, any advice for learning a particular language or any resources you used? Any help is much appreciated! ♥
Questions for people who learned French as a second/+ language fluently and already knew a romance language? Hi. I am a native speaker of both Spanish and English. I also speak Italian semi-fluently. I would be interested in also learning French. I was wondering how long it took you, being someone who learned it as a second/third/+ language, to learn it and become fluent and what resources you used to do so. If possible, could you please give some background as to what language(s) you knew before and other information you may believe relevant. Thanks in advance.
Is PRACTICING English the best way to LEARN English? I study computer science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. English is my second language. I need to improve my English skills. When I was in El Salvador, my country, I thought that being in the United States would help me to improve my English skills because I would be able to practice English every single day. But now that I am here, I realize that practicing English, I mean, talking in English with other people, does not really help me as much as I thought, because if I do not understand a specific word, I just use the context or as the person to reword the sentence, and I can eventually understand. So I feel that I learn more from the BBC Learning English, by memorizing words, getting new vocabulary, etc. I'm starting to think that practicing English is not as useful as I thought it would be. I could be learning English from my Spanish speaking country, from the Internet. I am here but I still feel that I learn more from the BBC Learning English, or The Free Dictionary, than what I really learn by practicing and getting involved in everyday activities with Americans or other people who speak English here. So, do you think that practicing English is the best way for me to learn english? For example, if I have 2 free hours, I think that I learn more by spending these two hours in front of my computer memorizing words, looking up for new words, listening to resources for learning English from the BBC, than what I would learn by talking 2 hours with people in English, at the cafeteria or somewhere else. So I do not feel that living in the United States is really helping me to LEARN English, because all that I do is to practice English here, but if I do not understand something, that's it. But if I am in front of the computer, I look up for words, and it is easier for me to understand from the definitions on the internet than from the explanations of people, and I trust more in the internet sources like The Free Dictionary, than on the explanations people can offer me. What do you think? Jaime Montoya webmaster@jaimemontoya.com http://www.jaimemontoya.com
why is my english still poorer than a nine-year old american boy's? I have been learning English as a second language for 9 years. In the first seven and a half years, I learned it mostly at school for the purpose of passing the exam. Starting one and a half years ago, I have been learning English in a much more systematic and much more intensive way. Everyday I spent several hours listening, reading, watching or speaking English or something concerning English. My efforts have paid off, I am the best English speaker in our major. But the truth is I'm living in China, where a very good English learning environment cannot be provided due to lack of access to English. Though we put much emphasis on English as many other countries do, we don't have too many chances to really open our mouth and speak English and the resources for learning English are not very abundant. So I have to invest much time finding English movies to watch and searching for good English novels to read, and I did. I also practice my oral English as often as possible with my classmates who are also chinese. I see progress, but recently I painfully appreciated that a nine year-old American boy can speak English much better than I do while I am more than twice his age and have learned English for just as long as he has. I can't match a nine-year old boy in terms of listening ability as well as vocabulary. Do you think I should feel ashamed of that or is it just normal and nothing to be ashamed of? Thanks for your illumination.
What language do the bermudans speak? Tell me something other than english but plz don't give me resources from Wiki cuz that stuff can be edited all the time and it might not be true thanks! Do they speak spanish?

The government, from the White House to our little city of Lompoc, hopped aboard the “save the environment” bandwagon. We have collected newspapers, plastics, soft drink cans, etc., recycling nearly everything we can to green our environment. Yet this very government that encourages the greening of America has taken a huge step backward in one major expenditure of valuable resources — trees cut — by requiring all documents to be published bilingually, in English and Spanish. Therefore, every document printed by any level of government requires twice as many trees cut down to make more paper, requiring more fuel to cut and haul, water and fuel to process, postage, delivery costs, etc. When you call a government office, store, doctor, etc., you are asked to “press 1 for Spanish, 2 for English” (Isn’t this, at the very least, in reverse?). One way to help reduce these budgets is by adopting English as the national language. Did we print duplicate language documents after Word War I, World War II, Korean or Vietnam wars when following these events large numbers of legally documented German, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese people chose to immigrate here? Do we print duplicates in Cherokee, Navajo, Apache, etc., America’s original native languages? Then, why now, and especially for largely “illegals”? We should discontinue printing of our nation’s documents in Spanish, eliminate having Spanish as a second language in our workplace, etc., and have the right to speak to someone on the phone at any government agency or store in English without having to “press 2.” We should adopt the French attitude — “‘If you live here, speak the language.” Advertisement Mexico’s language policy favors unilingualism — one language, Spanish. Are we as smart as we think? I find it amusing that scientists keep saying that we are more intelligent than prehistoric people, but I beg to differ. Here's why- Einstein's brain was smaller than the average human brain, but he was a genius. Every time we advance, it's because somebody discovered something then, somebody else found a use for it. Not once has anybody just "magically" invented something. They had the available resources to make their invention. For example, a prehistoric human woke up one day, stepped on a piece of flint, discovered that it cut the bottom of his foot, looked over and saw a long branch, and thought, "Hmmm... If I somehow attach this pointy rock to that stick over there, I might be able to hunt more efficiently.". Nowadays, we have teams of people who think, "Hmmm... If we arrange the Central Processing Unit to be closer to the fan, the thermal efficiency will be 70% higher.". If you want to argue that the modern humans in the above example were more intelligent becuase they had a larger vocabulary, go ahead. Just remember though that back in prehistoric times, the only need for language was to describe something important, such as a cougar attacking the village. As time went on, we needed more words to describe stuff. Ironically, most of the English language comes from other languages, which comes from older languages, which. well... you get the idea. So, how intelligent are we? I see no reason to know the difference between intelligence and knowledge, thus, I have concluded that my subtheory on modern vocabulary still holds water. EXACTLY- We have more time to improve our technology because prehistoric humans did the hard work for us. Remember- Every invention has an old world counterpart (i.e. lightbulb=campfire, computer=abacus, mmorpgs=a bunch of prehistoric humans sitting in a circle telling stories and trying to outdo one another in an attempt to impress the female population, who, were too busy checking out the prehistoric humans that were chasing after a deer to notice).
Teaching English Abroad Question? Hi, all. I just wanted to ask around the general internet community to get some answers about TEFL/Tesl related issues. I would particularly love to hear from some people who have done this before, or students who have been in an ESL classroom before. I have a B.A. in English (with a minor in History, but I doubt that matters), and I am 22. I still have a few problems with speaking in front of large groups, but I am working on that. I have been thinking about starting a career in TESL. I have been doing a lot of research, but I still feel a bit overwhelmed with all the information out there. Many times, different people give me different answers. I have a few questions that I would love some input on: 1)Is it important to have an actual teaching certificate/degree in education? If so, how important? Do the majority of TESL teachers have one? I know the English language very well, but I really don't know very much at all about teaching. How will it hurt my chances on the job market if I don't have either? 2) Ok, I know what all the different programs claim, but seriously, how much of a living can I really expect to make? I don't need a whole lot, I can live simply and still be happy; however, I do happen to have lot of debt from college that I will have to start paying off soon. Is it possible to make enough to live comfortably in this job field and still have enough to make payments on my loan? 3) What do you do about things like health insurance? I am a generally healthy person and I rarely get sick (and when I do, I know how to take care of myself fairly well), but I do have a couple of prescriptions that I need to consistently have filled. I know you can get a mail order ofthe one, but I' not sure about the other. How would that work abroad? 4) Is there any kind of widely accepted standard by which one can judge the quality of a TESL program? I keep reading about the many different programs, and almost each one introduces all kinds of new terms I have never heard of before. There is a program through a local college near me (Kent State University in Ohio) in which students spend a semester in Dresden, Germany, taking the required courses for the certificate at the University there as well as practicing in the classroom. I like the way this program sounds on paper, but I'm really not sure how to tell if it would be credible in the job market. 5) I've heard this said many times, but I still don't quite understand how one can teach students if one does not at least understand their language. How exactly does that work? And finally... if you know of any resources (online of otherwise) that would help me learn more, I would apreciate the help very much. I am also starting to look at ESL in a missionary setting, if anyone has any info in that area. Thanks for any help in advance! :-)
How do I find an affordable but trustworthy proof-reader to prepare my novel/ screenplay for pitching? I live and write in UK, but English being my second language I still draw an occasional but persistent blank when it comes to indefinite/ definite articles, and a couple of other things to do with English grammar. With limited financial/ contacts resources I had been relying on help from my friends in the past, but have since come to realise that these kinds of partnership are neither fair (on them), nor particularly useful in producing a professional package expected by your average agent, oh-so-overburdened by relentless pouring in of talent. Anyway....... Can't think of how to go about finding someone willing and capable of proof-reading without having to sell the car/ house/ plot of land/ soul, all of which I might or might not have, in order to pay them for the services rendered. Any suggestions of a helpful nature much appreciated. Thanks.
Could someone check my translation in UK-English? My native language is not english. Thanks a lot!? With such rate of exploiting of sand as natural resource, the nature degradation started and hollows in the earth have been created. They are being filled with water from rainfalls, and made into swamps and little lakes, which are sources of mosquitoes and unpleasant odors. considering majoring in linguistics as a translator or interpreter, but unsure of what this entails? i've been trying to figure out what to do as a career since near the end of high school and havent been able to think of anything good. so i asked the all powerful internets and they have told me time and time again that i should be a linguist and work as a translator or interpreter. i thought long and hard about this and am unsure about what to do. im getting ready to transfer to either the university of arizona or the university of phoenix after i finish up this semester, but i still have no clue what to major in (which is kind of required ;P) and so far the suggestion of being a linguist is one of the only ones that kinda peaked my interest, simply learn another language and tell people what other people are saying, right? i get to use my brain without doing hard math problems or anything that the other careers ive considered require. basically i have a bunch of questions i would hope to have answers to from you fine people of the interwebs- what does this require? what language(s) should i learn? how much will this cost? how much will i be able to make? what kind of stuff would i have to do? ive alwys gotten straight A's without even really trying all throughout school including college (although i did get a B in physics 110 once and my parents beat me lol), so i have a pretty good head on my shoulders- though i've never really been creative or ambitious enough to use it for anything. ive been learning japanese in my spare time from various resources on the web and am starting to get it a little (but free resources are really hard to find). and before anyone even suggested linguist i was already planning on learning as many other languages as possible like italian, french, russian, etc. just for the heck of it(to be a showoff). throughout college writing and english have always been my best subject, and have been told by pretty much everyone who proofread my essays that i was the best writer in the class, so i have a pretty good handle on the english language. and to top it all off i am a very modest and humble person. >_> oops.. dammit, i always end up making these questions way too long and drawn out... sorry about that so what does it take to be a successful linguist, what should i do? are their any linguists, translators, or interpretters who would be willing to write a longwinded reply to my even more longwinded question telling what you had to do to get where you are, how much it costs, how much you make, etc thanks, and sorry again for the wall of text... i have a bad habbit of doing that ok apparently being a linguist is different from being a translator which is what im interested in im interested in learning a specific language and translating and stuff, not the study of languages in general
Do you have an information about this book on international fairy tales? I am trying to help a friend locate a book she used to read to her daughter when her daughter was very young. Here are some details. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks! It was a book of international/world fairy tales or perhaps they were referred to as children’s stories. The book was a hard cover published prior to 1975 but I believe it was published as many as a few decades before (1950s?). The cover was gray or something similar but it might be different with a dust jacket which was missing from this copy. The cover may also have had a simple drawing of a troll on it and, in fact, the one story I can relate is about a troll. The book was in English and likely contained translations from other languages. (If it helps, the book was likely purchased in the New England area and is very likely an American publication.) P.S. I have tried searching amazon.com, google books, ABE, and library resources... Help?
Best resources for Improving English as a First Language? English is my first (and only) language. I've been out of school for a few years and I wish to study and improve upon my English. Most books seem to be geared towards individuals learning English as an additional language. I'd be grateful for some advice as to the best books to brush up on the basics, of which I require review, as well as those addressing some of the more difficult concepts. Where should a native speaker looking for improvement turn to?

Should we expect migrants to pass basic tests on English language, Law, and Culture? To be passed at our overseas embassies before they are allowed to travel here to find work? "A police chief has called on the government to provide more cash to fight crime as migrant workers pressure resources. She said migration, mainly fuelled by the area's burgeoning agricultural industry, had major benefits but also a social downside including crime. Much of it was driven by foreigners not understanding basic British laws. For instance, knife crime had jumped because more people were carrying them for protection. Drink-driving among foreigners had gone up 17 times in the space of a year, partly because individuals were behaving as if they were in their own country.

The Majority of people in Canada speak English as their first language, but in the Canadian province of Quebec The Majority of people in Canada speak English as their first language, but in the Canadian province of Quebec, most people speak French as their first language. Supporters of this idea have believed that A) regions once defined should never be changed B) political boundaries should reflect the cultural characteristics of regions. C) economic boundaries are defined by the physical resources of a region D) physical characteristics are more important than cultural characteristics in defining regions.
Is there such a term "around the table" in English language? I am describing a meeting where gas-exporting countries meet to discuss gas issues. Here is the context: ------------------------ We know that countries represented *around the table* here are endowed with plentiful natural gas resources and, for that reason, would have to wisely manage the resources and to ensure that it serves not only the country’s benefit but also for the global community.

Human Resources Question? Do I have to speak English to all employees? I am new to the HR Dept and my boss asked my coworker (not me) that we should speak english to those employees that know a little bit of english.....to promote an english speaking environment. Most of those people do not start out the conservation in english but in there native language. I feel I was hired for being bilingual...so why am I not suppose to use it. Basically I am wondering is that Legal for her to ask that of us? The main concern is that my coworker and I have to speak only English to the employees that were hired before this "rule". They are coming to us with concerns and questions and feel comfortable speaking in there native language to make sure there point is received. For the applicants we are speaking English and encouraging her "English only rule".
English not first language for 800,000 children - a problem? "More than 800,000 schoolchildren do not speak English as their first language, official figures have disclosed" I know it drains resources but it the UK storing up problems for the future? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1912331/English-not-first-language-for-800000-children.html It cost £5k per year per child in a state school (with no special provision), so it costs the tax payers for the 800,000 kids who I assume were not born in the UK £4,000,000,000 a year. Where can I get English Language Firefighter training in Quebec? There is already a thread ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080619200055AAcYlQs ) related to becoming a firefighter in Montreal but I wanted to elaborate on it further. While researching how to become a firefighter in Montreal, Quebec, Canada I found many resources that stressed the advantages of getting the Collegial Studies Diploma (DEC) in fire safety as opposed to just getting the Vocational Studies Diploma in Intervention en Sécurité Incendie. The problem is that the only Colleges that offer this program are French Language colleges; I would prefer to do my schooling in English if possible and was wondering what my options are in Quebec or the neighboring provinces for English Language instruction which will be recognized by the Quebec government and allow me to apply for a job in Montreal. On a Side Note is the DEC really as advantageous as I've heard? I'm weary of completing a two year program for no reason.
English as a second language? Do you or don't you agree that English as a second language should be a course for children , in elementary school, who were born in the United States? I, for one, believe that if one is born in the US, English should be the primary language. If the family chooses to only speak their native language, i.e Arabic, Spanish,Swahili, French, etc, we should not waste resources to teach the children "English as a Second Language." What do you think? What is confusing about this statement? I, , for one, believe that if one is born in the US, English should be the primary language.

foreign language bookstores in the U.K.? I learn French, German and Spanish (I'm 15 and my native language is English). I think a good way to re-inforce my learning would be to find some authentic material. Is there anywhere in the United Kingdom that you would recommend for foreign language resources? Preferably accessible to the midlands but if not then just generally around the UK will do. Thanks so much you're really helping me out.
Looking for english terminology bank? Dear all, I'm looking for some comprehensive and good online resources that has gathered possibly all incident term in english language. Does someone help me on this?
Anyone have an interesting topic that I could do for my research paper for AP English:Language and Composition? The paper has to be able to have an argument in it (such as if you were choosing abortion, you'd have to argue either pro life or pro choice) but I don't know what I can do that has to deal with an argument since I don't want to do something completely overused, like abortion, or captial punishment. Also, I have to have two online resources and at least two print (as in book, newspaper, etc) resources. I originally had an idea about writing a paper about the racial stereotypes in movies, but I don't know if there would be enough print resources out there. Anyone have an idea?
Websites with ideas for teaching English as a Second language? Hi My boyfriend's nephew is 6 years old and had been learning SOME english before the collapse of Nova. He can't speak fluently but knows some words and very simple phrases. I promised I'd give him a few lessons during my visit to Japan (in June) but I don't have creative ideas to help him learn. Does anyone have any websites with creative games or lessons for teaching English to a 6-year old? I'm a public school teacher so I have some resources but I don't deal with elementary school kids or ESL. Thanks.
Help me with my grammar--English is my second language. 10 points for the best advice. Thank you? It was my pleasure to speak with you on the phone. I would like to reschedule the interview because I am still waiting for the employment authorization to be issued. As I indicated that I am a current full-time student pursuing a Master of Public Administration (Human Resource Management) and a graduate assistant in the Department of Management, Marketing, and Public Administration. In addition, I am a foreign student holding F-1 visa. Currently, I am still waiting for the USCIS to issue my employment authorization. Immigration out of control and Britain is sinking what say you people of Britain? Many schools have been struggling to cope with immigrants, a Home Office report showed yesterday. Teachers were finding it hard to handle the extra pupils who speak English as a second language. And funding from local authorities has not been adjusted to allow for higher translation costs. Some regions complained especially of "mid-year churn" - the disruption caused by pupils arriving and leaving within the school year. Across the UK there has been an increase in demand for English language courses, which has led to a shortage of evening classes. The report looked at eight regions around the UK in the first major study of the impact on immigration on the education system. The National Union of Teachers' general secretary Steve Sinnott said: "Funds are needed to help cope with the problems of migrants and the teaching of English as a second language. "Because there isn't enough money to deal with the migrants and their families, people are blaming the children, not the lack of resources. "Many children arriving here have fled traumatic experiences. "Authorities need to have money to deal with the difficulties this brings."

How can I see rare books in distant libraries? I'm doing research on an obscure topic (involving English language diaries and travelogues written about a particular area in Japan). I've found several possible leads on materials I want to investigate via the internet library catalogue system (worldcat), but the few (old and rare) resources I need are all located in distant locations (university libraries, mostly). Is there ANY way I can get access to those materials without actually travelling to the libraries in person?!? Isn't there SOME way to see these old books without spending thousands of dollars -- especially when I can't be certain they will really help my research? ANY ideas are welcomed! THANKS. (p.s.--internet availability of all books, I'm waiting for you!!)
points!! who can help me with my text in english, is my 2nd language? I have realized that one of the most important points, it has been the influence that she has had on me in what concerns hospitals, she always wanted that I saw positive as negative aspects , she did not bring up me with a thought of perfect world, when she had the opportunity, she used to take me to hospitals where she was working, She was telling me the life of the patients, the motive of being hospitalized and much more. It was very sad, to see especially, homeless children , children with serious diseases and without resources to finance operations, you really does not feel it until you see it. I remember that she used to bring children of the ladies of the market to home, she was bathing them and was dressing them in clothes that already we did not wear. despite we were not in a good economic situation, so It was a meaningful gesture from her Finally, thanks to all the good and bad moments that I spent with her I consider a helpful person and I know that she has instilled it to me when I was a child.
